The STR has been fighting to eliminate content from textbooks that describe evolution, including the discovery of the feathered dinosaur Archaeopteryx as an early bird's ancestor. This is only one aspect of the evolution of the developmental paradigm.

What is Evolution?

Evolution is a scientific theory that explains the change in genetic characteristics of living organisms over time. The theory is based on the fact that living organisms adjust to their environment, which can result in variations in genes or whole genomes. Over the course of many generations the changes could lead to the emergence new species. The predominant theory of evolution is known as natural selection, which describes the process that allows those with favorable characteristics live and reproduce more often than those with disadvantages. As time passes, this difference in reproduction can lead to the emergence of completely new species.

The term "evolution", which comes from Latin for revealing or unrolling, has been used in a variety of different ways as the concept has evolved in both science as well as elsewhere. Early evolutionists like Erasmus Darwin (Charles’s grandfather) and Jean Baptiste de Lamarck believed that species were predestined to change into a new species. The term transmutation was coined by Lamarck's disciple embryologist Etienne Geoffroy Saint Hilaire, to describe this notion. Charles Lyell, who published the second volume of his Principles of Geology in 1833 opposed this notion and borrowed the term "evolution" from Geoffroy's student to describe the view that existing species change into other species in a gradual and predictable manner.

Evolutionary biologists define it more recently as a process by which living things develop characteristics to improve their chances of living or conceiving offspring. In time, genetic variation can lead a population to acquire new physical characteristics or biological functions. Such a change in gene frequencies is known as natural selection and it is the main driver of evolutionary changes. However, non-genetic changes such as increases in muscle mass due to diet or exercise can't be considered examples of evolution because they are not inherited by future generations.

Creationists have a tendency to use the argument that evolution is controversial even though it has been proven to be valid by a multitude of scientific tests and it has stood the test of time. They claim that the concept should not be taught in schools. In South Korea, creationists have gained a few victories in their campaign to exclude evolution from textbooks for high school which includes the removal of any mention of the evolutionary history of humans, as well as the Archaeopteryx feathered dinosaur believed to be an ancestral bird's parent.

Why is Evolution Important for Humanity?

Evolution explains the origins and evolution of Earth and all living species. It is also one of the pillars of biology, and helps scientists to understand how living things function and grow. It is crucial to keep in mind that evolutionary biology does not interfere with religious beliefs since it only focuses on physical objects, events and processes.

Many religious people have come up with a way of reconciling evolution with their convictions. For instance some Christians believe that God created the universe through evolution and that humans have an ancestral connection with other animals.

It is essential for scientists to support the teaching of evolution. Unfortunately, in some countries around the globe there is a growing anti-evolutionist sentiment. In the United States, efforts to restrict the teaching of evolution have made some headway in a few states. In South Korea, a group called the Society for Textbook Revise (STR) which is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research is pushing for the elimination of textbook content on the evolution of horses as well as the avian ancestral Archaeopteryx.

It is vital to remember, however, that the evidence in support of evolution is overwhelming. The evidence comes from a wide variety of sources, including fossils, genetic studies and the behavior of living organisms. Other scientists independently confirm the evidence.

The majority of scientists agree with the theory of evolution. This support is based on many different reasons. Scientists study evolution to discover practical solutions such as the development of new medicines and other treatments, while others use it to improve the quality of animal and plant species, usually for the benefit humans. Some are simply curious, whereas others have a deep religious belief in God and seek to know how the universe works.

What is Creationism?

Creationists believe that God created everything in the universe. They also believe that the Bible is God's word and should be taken literally. Many creationists are Christians, but not all. Creationists generally fall into one of two categories: Young Earth creationists (YEC) and old earth creationists (OEC).

The most common type of creationist is known as the YEC. They believe that God created the universe in the exact manner described in the Bible. They believe that the biblical account of the six days of creation is literal and that the universe and the life on Earth were only created recently.

Both types of creationism reject the notion that scientific principles such as natural selection and abiogenesis are able to explain the origin of life on Earth. They claim that evolution is inconceivable because it requires miracles. The founders of modern scientific thought shunned miracles out of fear they would lose their credibility.

Some creationists believe in both naturalistic evolution and special creation, and refer to their belief "theistic evolution." It is sometimes referred to as "continuous creationism" or "evolution from the created species." The theory suggests that God creates original species and then allows these to change over time. Eventually these evolutionary changes will result in new species identical to the original species.

Some creationists believe that God created all living things and the universe in one event called the Great Flood. They believe that all the original species were created at the same time and that they gradually evolved. They deny the notion of abiogenesis and claim that self-replicating life can't come from non-living matter.

In general, the creationists oppose teaching evolution at schools. This is supported by a myriad of professional associations which include the National Science Teachers Association, the Association for Science Teacher Education as well as the American Anthropological Association, and the Geological Society of America. Certain scientists and educational institutions are, however, more flexible and allow evolution and creationism to be included in their curriculum.

What exactly is Creationism in Korea?

When people think of the concept of creationism most often, they think of the United States. South Korea also has an anti-evolution group. The publishers of high school textbooks recently announced that they would eliminate references to evolution in their books. The Society for Textbook Revise, an independent body that is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research (KACCR) has been the driving force behind this drive. STR has achieved its first victory in eliminating instances of the evolution of the horse as well as an avian ancestor called the Archeopteryx, from textbooks. The next goal is to take out the finch-research of Darwin's famed and also on human evolution.

STR claims to have the support of 4,000 families and individual members. Its goal, it says is to clear the world of what it calls "atheist materialism" which portrays an image of students as being negative. It also aims to counteract the influence of American creationists in the country. A survey of trainee biology teachers found that about half do not believe in evolution. The causes aren't clear however, they could be related to religious beliefs or the absence of full-time creation scientists across the United States.

The KACR has achieved a lot through its lectures and seminars in the past. It also publishes a bimonthly magazine called Creation and an ebook. The most notable of these is a text on the natural sciences, with a creationist viewpoint, which sparked interest in college communities. In 1991, a professor and minister started teaching Creation Science in one university and it continues to be taught until today.

On August 7 and 8, 1993, coinciding with the World Expo opened in Daejeon, KACR held a second International Symposium on Creation Research. Six lecturers from outside the country, including ICR's John Morris and Steven Austin, spoke to thousands of people. KACR and its members have been delivering talks on creation science at major seminaries, too. KACR plans to create a Creation Science Education Center in the near future.
