What is Evolution?

The word "evolution" is derived from the Latin word meaning unrolling or revealing. However, the concept has had a variety of meanings over the years as it has taken form in the fields of science and in other fields. Early evolutionists, such as Jean Baptiste de Lamarck and Erasmus Darwin (Charles's grandfather) believed that existing species transformed into other species in a planned manner. Etienne Geoffroy St.Hilaire was Lamarck's embryologist disciple who invented the term "transmutation" to describe this idea. Charles Lyell, who published the second volume of his Principles of Geology in 1833 opposed this notion and borrowed the term "evolution" from Geoffroy's student to describe the idea that existing species evolve into new species in an orderly and predictable manner.

In recent years, evolutionary biologists have defined evolution as a process when living creatures develop characteristics that increase their chances of survival or ability to reproduce offspring. In time, this genetic variability can result in the development of completely new physical or biological functions in a population. Natural selection is the process that drives the majority of evolutionary changes. Other changes that aren't genetic, such as an increase in muscle mass through exercise or diet, cannot be considered evolution because they aren't passed on to future generations.

Despite the fact that evolution has stood the test of time and a multitude of scientific tests however, creationists have taken advantage of the idea that the theory is controversial to claim that it shouldn't be taught in school. In South Korea, creationists won some victories against evolution in high school textbooks. This includes the removal of references about the evolutionary history of humans and Archaeopteryx - a feathered dinosaur believed to be the ancestor of birds.

Why is Evolution important to humanity?

Evolution explains the origins of Earth and all living species. It also serves as a basis of biology, and aids scientists to learn how living organisms function and develop. Evolution also shows how various species are linked. Scientists study evolution in order to better understand nature and make useful discoveries, such as the development of new treatments.

The evidence for evolution is overwhelming. There is no other scientific theory that can explain so many aspects of the universe and life on this planet, and it has been thoroughly tested and confirmed over the course of many years. Many people, including religious leaders, are in support of the scientific theory. It is crucial to keep in mind that evolutionary biology does not interfere with religious beliefs since it only addresses physical objects, events and processes.

In reality many religious individuals have discovered ways to reconcile their beliefs with evolution. For example some Christians believe that God created the universe through evolution and that humans have an ancestry with other animals.

It is crucial for scientists to support the teaching of evolution. In certain countries, the anti-evolution movement has been growing. In the United States some states have taken steps to limit teaching evolution. In South Korea, a group known as the Society for Textbook Revise, an offshoot from the Korea Association for Creation Research (KAC) is pushing for textbooks that cover the evolution of horses and their avian ancestor Archaeopteryx.

It is important to remember, however, that the evidence in favor of evolution is overwhelming. The evidence for evolution comes from a variety of sources, including fossils, genetics and the behavior of living creatures. The evidence is also independently verified by other scientists.

The majority of scientists support the theory of evolution. The reasons behind this support are diverse. Some scientists study evolution to make practical discoveries such as the development of new medicines, while others do so to improve animal and plants species, usually for the benefit humans. Some are simply curious, whereas still others have a deep religious belief in God and are seeking to know how the universe functions.

What is Creationism?

Creationists believe that God created all things in the universe. They also believe that the Bible is God's word and should be interpreted in a literal manner. Although some creationists are not Christian but they are a majority. Creationists typically fall into one of two categories: Young Earth creationists (YEC) and old earth creationists (OEC).

The YECs are the best known form of creationist, and they believe that God created the universe exactly as described in the Bible. YECs believe that the biblical account of the creation's six days is true and that the universe and life on Earth began only recently.

OECs aren't as well-known However, their beliefs are as passionate like the YECs. OECs believe that the universe and all life on Earth are billions of years old and they believe that evolution is a myth.

Both types of creationism deny that scientific principles such as natural selection and abiogenesis are able to explain the origin of life on Earth. They argue that evolution is not possible because it would require miracles. The pioneers of modern scientific thought shunned miracles out of fear they could lose their credibility.

Some creationists believe in both naturalistic evolution and special creation, and refer to their belief "theistic evolution." This is sometimes also referred to as "continuous creationism" or "evolution from created kinds." In this view, God creates the original species, and then allows them to evolve over time. In the end the evolutionary changes produce new species that are identical to the original species.

Others believe that God created the universe and all living things in one event, known as the Great Flood. In general, creationists are against teaching evolution in schools. The publishers of textbooks for high school students have recently declared that they will be removing references to evolution from their books. The Society for Textbook Revise, an independent body that is an offshoot from the Korea Association for Creation Research (KACCR), has led this drive. STR has achieved its first victory by eliminating instances of the evolution of the horse as well as an avian ancestor, called the Archeopteryx from textbooks. Its sights are now set on removing excerpts from Darwin's notorious finch research and on human evolution, too.

STR claims to have the support of around 4,000 families and individuals. The goal, according to STR is to cleanse the world of what it calls "atheist materialism" which portrays an image of students as being negative. It also hopes to combat the influence of American Creationists in the nation. A survey of students in biology found that half did not believe in evolution. The causes are not clear, but could include religious beliefs or the lack of creation scientists in the country.

The KACR achieved many things through its seminars and lectures in the past. It has a bimonthly news magazine, Creation, and has published books. One of these was a textbook on natural sciences that had a creationist perspective. This sparked an interest in college communities. In 1991 an academic and minister started teaching Creation Science in one university, and it continues to be taught to this day.

On August 6-7 in 1993, the same day that the World Expo opened in Daejeon, KACR held a second International Symposium on Creation Research. Six lecturers from abroad including ICR's John Morris and Steven Austin, spoke to an audience of several thousand. KACR and its members have been delivering lectures on creation science at major seminaries too. KACR plans to establish a Creation Science Education Center.
